AQUA CULTURE & RAS SYSTEMS

Good lighting is an important aspect here to ensure optimal growth and health for the fish

Aquaculture is the cultivation of aquatic animals in controlled environments, such as fish farms, while RAS (Recirculating Aquaculture Systems) are recirculating aquaculture systems that reuse most of the water and purify it from waste. Lighting influences several factors.

Light is an important tool for improving production and the welfare of fish. With an optimized composition of LEDs, RN Solutions Aquaculture LED lighting reduces feed consumption, and the right light distribution helps prevent exposure to, for example, salmon lice. With a gentle start when initiating the lighting program and a low dimming level, it also reduces the stress level of the fish, improving their welfare. The light spectrum is optimized for distribution underwater, just as the fish's eye is sensitive to the photoreceptors of the pineal gland, maximizing the contribution to increased growth without maturation. Salmon are kept in a perpetual summer state to prevent spawning and maintain good taste and texture during the growth phase.

The light distribution is unique because it is directed downward in sea cages or tanks. The optimized light density combined with the downward light beam ensures that the fish will swim deeper. - When installed at depths of less than 5 meters, it reduces the need for salmon lice treatments, as the fish will mostly swim below the salmon lice belt (in sea cages). This also reduces the amount of electricity used and ensures that light pollution is not created. In tanks, the light distribution is important to make the best use of the tanks and thus achieve better feed consumption, and more.

IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS FOR LIGHTING IN AQUACULTURE AND RAS SYSTEMS:

  • Influences fish behavior, appetite, stress levels, and reproduction
  • Water temperature, oxygen content, and pH value
  • Algae growth, bacterial activity, and biofilter efficiency
  • Fish species, size, life cycle, and natural habitat
  • Facility design, size, shape, and location
  • Facility's objectives, whether it's for production, research, or exhibition
  • Facility's energy consumption, maintenance, and operating costs
  • Durability in harsh environments with water and vapors, requires external durability

"It is clearly the best lighting we could find for our salmon. It is exactly as promised, quality that withstands the conditions," says Kim Lyhne, CEO of Danish Salmon.
